REVIEW: There are not too many stories that I can claim to read in one sitting. It just so happens that SUGAR COATED LOVE is one of the stories that completely pulled me in so deep that I didn’t surface until I finished it. It’s a captivating story that takes the “Friends-to-Lovers” trope to another level. Finley Cooper and Cassius “Cash” Warren are the friends who finally have a “come-to-Jesus” moment and declare their love for each other.
It all starts with a road trip that begins in Raleigh, North Carolina, and ends in Chicago, Illinois where the first Chi-Flavor Afro-Caribbean Carnivale is being held. Cash, along with Gemini, his food truck that represents Pleasure Pastries, the restaurant he inherited from his late sister, is going to showcase his latest culinary treat. Who better to assist him at this event than Finley, his number one fan, friend and secret crush? Finley and Cash have a common connection that you will discover as the storyline unfolds. They have a history, and it is influenced by one person. Ironically, the outcome of their relationship also hinges on their history. It’s an intriguing plot point in the storyline. Now, back to the road trip. Kudos to author, Joy Avery for the vivid descriptions of some of the sights where our couple stops. The beautiful settings enhance the developing romance between our hero and heroine. Their intimate scenes are off-the-charts hot! However, after a successful fast-paced run at the Carnivale, their last moments in Chicago take a different direction that derails their relationship. No spoilers: you’ll discover what happens when you read the story.
I loved the side characters who helped to move the storyline along. Cash’s father and uncle are quite a pair as they support him, as well as try to run his life by offering unsolicited advice. That Madison L. VanBeran character is straight out of “The Devil Wears Prada”. I like how Finley handles that whole situation. The HEA is sweet and oh so satisfying. You’re going to love it!
I enjoyed SUGAR COATED LOVE from the first page to the last page, and I recommend it. The well-developed story is a worthy addition to the Carnivale Chronicles Series.
