THE PROFESSIONAL - D Camille

REVIEW: The Negus Effect Series continues with the Master, George Shaw, tapping Miles Johnson, the brother of Lance Johnson (The Black Land Series), to come from behind the scenes and step forward to utilize his skills to help with the Neo Negus. Now, if none of this resonates with you, then you have your work cut out for you. THE PROFESSIONAL is part of a continuing series that highlights the city of Detroit, and some very special Black men and women who are determined to fight crime, corruption, and graft that plagues their beloved city.
Miles Johnson is a smooth operator who moves to his own beat. That is, until he is summoned to help organize and oversee the group of young upstarts who were being used by people that did not have their best interests at heart. Now that the Neo Negus have been “rescued” by the Negus, Miles is called in to keep them on a straight and narrow path. Of course, in true D Camille style, it’s not going to be an easy task. The Neo Negus are a band of young brothers with no real experience at what they perceive to be their mission while the Negus are seasoned, experienced veterans of fighting the good fight against anything and anybody who seek to take over “The D” by unscrupulous means. Miles is also a man of mystery, and I love how the author gradually reveals the “real” Miles through the course of the story who, as D Camille describes, can “transition from professional, designer suits to jeans and Jay’s”.
The yin to Miles’ yang, the country girl to his city style comes along in the person of Olivia “Liv” Jones, sister to FBI Agent Taylor Gibbs (THE GUIDE). Miles and Liv are fire and ice. I love their scintillating dialogue, and the steam they produce. The karaoke scene where Miles and Liv perform Trey Songs’ Sumn Real provides some eye opening insight into their relationship. You’ll get that when you read the story.
At the other end of the plot spectrum, Miles, the Negus and Neo Negus have their hands full in taking down those corrupt forces that populate the city of Detroit. It gets very personal as they come up against those who plan to gentrify particular city neighborhoods and bring the “Kings” down. D Camille provides a glimpse, via the Epilogue, as to their next step. Look out for THE CHAMPION to step up to the plate!
THE PROFESSIONAL is a compelling read and I recommend it. Miles is my favorite Negus so far. His SWAG is off the charts! If you are looking for a good contemporary series, I recommend the The Negus Effect. Those of you who are already hooked on the series, pick up a copy of THE PROFESSIONAL. You won’t be sorry.
