REVIEW: DUTY OR DESIRE features Peterson “Pete” Higgins, the sheriff in the county of Denver where the Westmoreland Clan resides. His character has appeared in a number of stories that feature members of the Westmoreland family, so he is considered an “honorary Westmoreland”.

Pete, a bachelor, finds himself in a bit of a predicament when he has to assume custody of his nine-month-old-niece, Ciara. I won’t disclose the details; I’ll let you discover what happened. When his regular live-in nanny has to take a leave of absence, Pete reluctantly has to hire a newcomer to Denver, who is also the best qualified caregiver for his niece. Enter Myra Hollister, who is originally from Charleston, South Carolina. It’s no surprise that both Pete and Myra are immediately physically attracted to one another despite the age difference. You’ll get that when you read the story. However, Pete and Myra’s  romantic encounters are more reserved and lack that spontaneous combustion that we have come to expect from Brenda Jackson’s hero and heroine.  When Pete and Myra first meet, there are some red flags that pop up that Pete can not dismiss. It makes for an interesting plot point, but Myra’s backstory proves to be more intriguing than Pete’s. I’ll let you discover why Myra is really in Denver. It’s a family affair, and the plot thickens with blackmail, kidnapping, and human trafficking added to the mix.

The side characters include members of the Westmoreland family. If you are a follower of Mrs. Jackson’s Westmoreland family series, then you will enjoy the updates that are included in this story. There’s even a hint of a future story featuring Garth Outlaw, (
BREAKING BAILEY’S RULES) a family member from a newly discovered branch of the Westmoreland family tree.

I enjoyed
DUTY OR DESIRE, but Pete and Myra will not be in my top ten for most memorable couples. Nevertheless, I recommend this story. After all, it’s Brenda Jackson, and you can’t go wrong! Enjoy!
