REVIEW: For this sweet historical romance story, Author D Camille takes the reader back to the turbulent sixties, that marked the height of sit-ins, protests, and numerous Civil Rights struggles that occurred during this time. Both protagonists, Claude Morgan and Mae Mitchell, are participants in the protests. Their story is set in Pensacola, Florida, a very appropriate setting since this era is historically known for the protests that spread throughout cities of the South. At the start of the story, the summer of 1961, Claude and Mae are teenagers, but when Claude spots Mae at one of organizational meetings, he knows, without a doubt, that she is the one for him. It was in her smile. You’ll get that when you read this heart-warming story.

Claude Morgan is a very determined young man. He is determined to fight against discrimination, to see his dream of owning his own restaurant where Black people are welcomed, and he is determined to make the beautiful Mae his wife. Lofty goals for the time? Clearly. However, Claude has a plan, and he is intentional, ambitious, and organized. He also understands that as a Black man in the South with limited resources and opportunities, he will have to relocate North (New York) in order to see his plan of restaurant ownership come to fruition. Claude shares his plan with Mae who is a force to be reckoned with. She and Claude make an awesome power couple. There are also romantic moments that will bring a smile to your face. Claude gets Mae, and he knows how to keep her.

As Claude continues to put his plan into effect to own a restaurant, there are some societal roadblocks that delay him, but never stop him, and some life tragedies that test his faith. Yet, he perseveres. Claude’s strength of character really stands out in those moments. The side characters, composed of Claude’s family, his employers, and the mysterious stranger who helps him, play important roles in helping to move the storyline along.

If you know anything about D Camille’s books, you know they are meticulously connected by the memorable characters who populate the stories. That connection is priceless! Claude Morgan first appears in
THE ENCHANTMENT, Book 2 of The Book Club Series. He is not the main character, but his grandson, Darius, is. I am going to let that marinate right there. If you have no idea what I’m referring to, I strongly recommend that you check out D Camille’s books. You can thank me later.

WHEN CLAUDE MET MAE is an inspiring and motivating story that will resonate with every Black person who has ever had dreams and plans for a prosperous, productive future. It’s a sweet romance that reflects a time when Black people were determined to fight for the right to live satisfying, rewarding, loving lives despite oppression and discrimination. I recommend this book for your reading pleasure.
