REVIEW:  Prolific author, D Camille, dedicates THE EXPERT to Detroit City because “there’s no place like it”. The second book of the Negus Effect series certainly lives up to that dedication. If you recall, the Negus, a group of well-trained Brothers, use their skills and positions to rid Detroit’s Black community of crime, corruption, and drugs, in order to make it a viable and productive place to live. Not only are the Negus at work, but also another group has risen up which call themselves the Neo Negus. It is up to former Detroit police officer, Malachi Roberts, aka The Expert, to investigate these upstarts who are literally setting Detroit on fire. Joining him in his investigation is the lovely Cynthia Walters, the highly-touted investigative reporter of the Detroit News.

This story is a page turner for sure or “Fo’ Sho” if you’re from Detroit. Page after page, Malachi comes up against, arson, bombings, murder, graft in high places, illegal real estate deals, and countless bad people both male and female. The ‘D’ is rocking and reeling from an onslaught of questionable acts by the Neo Negus taken out on some of the city’s most nefarious denizens. Cynthia and Malachi are in sync as they both work untiringly to probe into the latest rash of acts, to uncover the identities of these young men, and to discover who is behind them.  Accompanying this mayhem is a friends-to-lovers trope subplot that the author deftly works into the storyline. You’re going to like this couple. They both know how to handle their business on the street and between the sheets. Malachi’s reputation as “The Expert” is not just a boastful title; it’s the real thing. However, I’ll let you discover his field of expertise. Get ready. Cynthia’s journalistic skills are on point, and her prowess with words, makes her a target in this battle of good vs. evil.

Familiar characters from the
The Black Land Series and the first book of this series, THE MASTER, reappear because all hands are on deck to solve this one; namely Lance Johnson, Benjamin Williams, Corvus Shaw, and George Shaw to name a few. Two of the most intriguing and cut-throat characters are Audrey Lang, Detroit’s infamous gossip-monger and Patrice Dansby, prison Queen-pin. It’s a great line-up of unforgettable characters.

At this point, I would love to tell you that all loose-ends and mysteries are solved. No can do. The Neo Negus, along with their form of vigilante justice, is still questionable. I will reveal, however, that Malachi and Cynthia take their relationship to the next level. Audrey Lang is still “missing”, and the Negus Effect is about to go up a notch. I can’t wait to see what happens next in
THE ACE, the third book of the series. Stay tuned. In the meantime, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of THE EXPERT. You can thank me later.
