REVIEW: Suzette D. Harrison’s WITH HER BABY ON HER BACK offers a compelling exploration of familial legacy, resilience, and the enduring impact of history through the lens of two remarkable women. With deft storytelling and evocative prose, the author transports the reader across time - from slavery’s cruel grip to the present day - revealing the links between generations. Ms. Harrison shifts the readers seamlessly through flashbacks from the brutality of slavery to the complexities of contemporary life.

The slavery period is anchored by Zanitha “Zinnie” Freeman, a root woman, midwife, and mother of three daughters. Zinnie’s story is inspired by the real-life Bridget “Biddy” Mason, a former slave whose courage led her to win her freedom in a California court and eventually became a prominent businessperson and millionaire. Through Zinnie, Ms. Harrison pays homage to Biddy’s legacy, portraying a woman whose wisdom and strength reverberate through generations.

In the present day, the story follows Lynette Stanford, a teacher and mother of Justus, an 11-year-old neurodivergent child. Lynette comes from a family of college-educated parents and siblings and faces both professional and personal challenges as she investigates her lineage to solve a mystery that traces back to Zinnie. Her search for answers regarding Zinnie’s past is central to the novel’s plot. As she uncovers hidden truths, the narrative illustrates the importance of understanding one’s roots and the ways, the stories of our forebears, shape our present and future.

WITH HER BABY ON HER BACK is a beautifully crafted historical fiction novel that pays tribute to the lives and journeys of Black women across generations. Ms. Harrison’s use of flashbacks, her nuanced portrayal of characters inspired by real historical figures, and her exploration of generational mysteries make this a stand-out read. The novel serves as a reminder that the past is ever-present, and that the courage of those who came before us continue to inspire and guide. Readers looking for a poignant, layered exploration of ancestry, resilience, and the ties that bind families, will find it in WITH HER BABY ON HER BACK . I highly recommend this moving story.
