REVIEW: I really enjoyed Aja’s THE SWEETEST RETURN. It is such a beautifully written second-chance romance, and what I appreciated most is how much emotional weight Aja gives to the idea of finding your way back to someone you once loved. Imani “Mani” Bennett and Andre “Dre” Jones have the kind of history that makes every glance, every conversation, and every quiet moment feel layered. Their reunion feels tender, complicated, and earned.
Mani was easy for me to root for. As the Chief Brand and Growth Officer of Saint Aurelia, an African American jewelry house, she is polished, ambitious, and clearly good at what she does. However, she never feels like just a career woman on the page—Aja lets us see her heart, her hesitation, and the places where the past matters. Dre, a former pro football player and businessman, brings his own presence to the story. He has confidence, of course, but what makes him memorable is the way Aja allows him to be vulnerable, thoughtful, and honest about what he wants.
I also loved the Pittsburgh setting. It gives the book a strong sense of place without overwhelming the romance. The presence of August Wilson University, a fictional HBCU, felt like such a thoughtful touch and a lovely homage to the gifted writer from Pittsburgh. That detail connected the story to a larger cultural and literary legacy while still keeping Mani and Dre’s love story at the center. Their return to their Alma Mater’s homecoming is the jump off point of a sweet love story that is movie worthy!
The dialogue is another standout. It is crisp, meaningful, and never wasted. I love when characters actually talk to each other in a way that reveals who they are, and Aja does that so well in this story. The conversations between Mani and Dre have feeling, tension, and honesty. And of course, the play-list is spot on. The music fits the mood perfectly, and adds another layer to the reading experience.
If you enjoy second-chance romances, real chemistry, and characters who must be honest about both the past and the future, THE SWEETEST RETURN, is absolutely worth picking up. Aja gives readers a love story that feels warm, soulful, and deeply satisfying. It is the kind of romance that makes you believe the sweetest return can also be the right one.
