REVIEW: The third read in the Once Upon A Murder Series features lead man, Gavin Black, Jr., the owner of Black River Falls, North Carolina’s prestigious art gallery. Prolific author, Sheryl Lister pairs Gavin with Nadia Dubois, a reporter who is assigned to interview Gavin. Gavin, like the other two lead characters we have met in this series, is a suspect in the disappearance of one, Monique Rivers, who nobody in the town liked. Does he have a motive? You bet he does—BIG time!
When you read the story, you’ll discover what happened to Gavin and Gavin’s family at the hands of the diabolical Rivers family. It almost destroyed them. Gavin hated Monique and everybody whose name was Rivers. What Monique did to Gavin when they were teens was absolutely disgusting. I wanted to step in and deck her myself. Good writing, Ms Lister!
Nadia is not from Black River Falls. She lands there from Seattle after resigning from her job when her boss wanted her to give up her source for an expose that she did on fraud at a company owned by one of his friends, Nadia took the high ground and left. What is more, her ex, Austin, tries to convince her to give up the name. Austin will show up in Black River Falls. Big mistake and a great subplot for this enthralling story. By the way, I loved the sweet meet-cute scene when Gavin and Nadia met. I can’t leave out the scene that mimicked the pottery wheel scene in the movie Ghost. Nice touch!
A special shout-out to side character, Ms. Octavia, who was a shero in this story! You’ll completely understand when you read the story. Familiar characters, Khalil, Sinceer, and Knox from previous books in the series are also on hand supporting Gavin. The HEA for Gavin and Nadia is everything!
I recommend THE SECRETS WE BREAK for your reading pleasure. It is captivating, intriguing, and compelling. Let me also say that I love this series! These author-ladies, Sherelle Green, Angela Seals, Sheryl Lister, and Elle Wright have combined their writing skills to produce four dark romantic suspense stories that are page turners.
