REVIEW: SNOWDEN’S TALE, part of an author collaborative Bae Reimagined series, is a gritty modern spin on the classic fairy tales of Snow White and The Snow Queen. Former professional football player Snowden—once jokingly dubbed “Snow White” during his playing days—has traded the field for running his own construction company. His life remains tied to the Crownes, and specifically the Drifters through business connections as well as through his daughter Snow, who attends Crowne Academy. There is a series crossover as readers met Snow’s mom and Snowden’s ex, Indigo Hood, in MAKE ME CONFESS. Snowden is divorced and scarred by betrayals and a painful past, especially the unresolved murder of his mother fifteen years earlier. When information surfaces that the killer may have returned to the country, Duchess and Stan push Snowden into action, enlisting the help of Icis Walker, a skilled assassin.
The complication is that Icis is Snowden’s ex-wife—the woman who broke his heart. Forced into close proximity while working together, they must confront past hurts, along with a chemistry that still simmers between them. Icis is still drawn to Snowden—a commanding presence at 6’4” with a football build, light eyes, and coffee-toned skin. They both find themselves battling old memories. Soon they fall into old habits, which includes their pre-battle ritual of physically connecting with each other. Icis hopes this second chance will finally allow her to explain the secrets and motives that led to their marriage and eventual downfall.
I liked how Green used the imagery of the Northern Lights to compare to how the characters were feeling. SNOWDEN’S TALE stays true to the gritty tone established in the Crowne stories, while uniquely crafting this story based on fairy tales.
