REVIEW: It has been a minute since we visited the Brooklyn Monarchs Basketball Team. The Monarchs, the pride of Brooklyn, New York, have won their first NBA championship in franchise history. Can they win back-to-back titles? They are going to give it their best shot, and this time they will have their point guard, Barron Douglass, who was on the IL (injured list) during the championship games last season. Although he celebrated with his teammates, it was a hollow victory for him because he never saw any play time. This year, however, he is determined that he will be in the thick of the battle playing with his teammates. His only concern is whether he will be able to handle the pressure and stress of the championship run and not revert to his old ways.
To relieve Barron, franchise owner, Jaclyn Jones (FAST BREAK) hires a personal assistant to help get him through post-season playoffs. Enter Tianna Maxwell, former event planner who is also involved in her own personal fight to be free of a stressful situation. Without spilling too much tea, I will say that both Barron and Tianna are fighting similar battles, alcoholism. Patricia Sargeant brilliantly takes the reader through the stresses and constant challenges that Barron and Tianna are facing daily as they struggle to cope with their addiction. The scene where Tianna stands up to Barron’s so-called friends who tempt him with a bottle of whiskey is a turning point in the storyline. Tianna has her own stressor that sends her straight to her positivity playlist. You will get that when you read the story.
I enjoyed reuniting with the star players of the Monarchs like Marlon Burress (GAME TIME DECISION) and Warwick Evans (KEEPING SCORE). A minor character who stands out is Tianna’s mother, Phoebe. She is the epitome of a dynamic character. For Barron and Tianna, their “Happy for Now” makes them both winners in the game of life!
I enjoyed reading HER GREATEST FAN. It is a well-written story that masterfully combines love and basketball. I recommend it for your reading pleasure. By the way, if you are not familiar with the Brooklyn Monarchs series, Books 1-5, I recommend them also. You can thank me later.
