REVIEW: The incomparable Brenda Jackson, queen of “love, passion, and promise” treats her faithful readers to a new series that highlights two of her book families, the Masters and the Bennetts. The first one, MASTERS OF THE GAME spotlights Colton Masters. Colton and Kelly Perkins, the female lead of this story, cross paths again for the third time at a Bennett family wedding where his brother, Cortez Masters married Victoria Bennett. Colton, Cortez and Cobra Masters are triplets. Unfortunately, when Colton and Kelly decide to “get together” after the wedding festivities, their plans to make a night of it, fall through when they discover that they are not on the same page for the kind of relationship they want. What went wrong? I will allow you to discover that when you read the story.
It isn’t until two years later that Colton and Kelly are reunited when the company, Masters Unlimited Corporation, where Colton is COO, and his cousin Lake Masters is CEO contracted KP Consulting Agency, owned by Kelly, to help in the selection process to open a third office. As it happens, Colton is assigned to work with Kelly on the project, and those feelings they had for each other resurface. While their days are spent in meetings and strategy sessions, their evenings are spent enjoying intimate dinners, Broadway shows, and eventually steamy nights. However, while Colton and Kelly are becoming more involved, there is a sinister plot against them being waged by an adversary of Kelly’s who begins a legal campaign to ruin her and her company’s reputation, along with Masters Unlimited. It is a strong subplot that provides complications to the central love story.
There are also some problematic personal issues that affect Kelly and Colton’s budding affair that they must deal with to solidify their commitment to each other. For Colton, they are personal, and for Kelly, they are connected to her family. These issues provide a lot of depth to the storyline. You’ll get it when you read the story.
