CHOCOLATE DROP - Edwina Martin-Arnold
REVIEWER: Brenda Larnell | RATING: A+
REVIEW: This story is the first one that I’ve read since we have been plagued with the COVID-19 pandemic that chronicles the social movements, the medical emergencies, and the untiring work of first responders that has marked this critical period of our lives. Author, Edwina Martin-Arnold definitely hits the ball out of the park with this story that features Maria Adrienne Anderson and Jian Patu, who not only rise to the occasion, but also manage a relationship. It’s a beautiful love story between a “Chocolate Drop” and MMA fighter. You’ll get that when you read the story.
CHOCOLATE DROP is set in Seattle, Washington, an appropriate setting because if you recall the first case of Covid-19 in the United States occurred in Seattle. This fact alone gives so much credence to the story. The heroine of the story, Maria, is the head of the Emergency Department at the same hospital where part-time MMA fighter and full-time Chief Pathologist, Dr. Jian Patu works. Yes, they are first responders, and their love journey is the heart and soul of this book. Their chemistry is strong and undeniable. However, between the pandemic, violent social protests, and their families’ dynamics, the challenge is real. The cultural differences of both Jian and Maria influence their actions. You’ll understand when you read the story. Jian’ s lineage is a combination of Samoan and Chinese while Maria is Sudanese on her mother’s side. The story is well-written and captures the intensity of the times. For example, in one scene, the tragic video of the murder of George Floyd captures the characters’ attention. It’s a riveting scene. Kudos to Ms. Martin-Arnold for a believable portrayal of ‘“love in the time of Corona”.
The minor characters contribute to the intrigue of the story and the development of the main characters. Maria’s grandmother, “Nana”, is a real character. I love her spirit. Jian and Maria’s HEA is wonderful and right on time after a dark period that separated the couple.
CHOCOLATE DROP is a captivating story that effectively utilizes today’s headlines. It can be read as a stand-alone. It is my favorite story of the three from the Chocolate Romance Series. I recommend it for your reading pleasure.
