REVIEW: Publisher’s Weekly Best-Selling Author, Belle Calhoune, displays her writing talents in this multi-author K-9 Companions series composed of 13 books. These stand-alone stories highlight dogs as major side-characters. In AN ALASKAN CHRISTMAS PROMISE, Ms. Calhoune transports the reader to a familiar setting, Owl Creek, Alaska. The story features Leo Duggan and Kit O’Malley. It’s a great take on the friends-to-lovers trope.

When the story opens, Kit is in need of a service dog that will help her as she deals with a diagnosed eye disease that threatens to take her sight. Leo Duggan is a trainer of service dogs. Kit and Leo are old acquaintances, and Kit has a special tie to the Duggan family that you will discover when you read the story. No spoilers. Leo consents to help Kit by training the last dog in his kennel, Jupiter. While that will greatly help Kit with one dilemma, she has another hurdle to get over. As a matter of fact, both she and Leo are struggling with secrets, heartaches, and the distress that life has thrown at them. They are both depending on their faith to see them through. I enjoyed this couple’s journey as they wrestled with their problems, and I liked how their friendship transformed into a beautiful romance.

The side characters are mainly composed of old friends whom both Leo and Kit know. If you are familiar with the author’s Owl Creek series, you will recognize Hank and Sage Crawford (
HER SECRET ALASKA FAMILY), and Maya and Ace Reynolds (THEIR ALASKAN PAST) just to name a few. Leo’s family and Kit’s family also play important side roles in the story. I can’t omit Jupiter, Kit’s service dog, or Kit’s daughter, Adaline. The Epilogue is truly an inspirational and wonderful ending to the old and marks a new beginning for Kit and Leo.

I enjoyed reading
AN ALASKAN CHRISTMAS PROMISE. It’s a perfect for this season. The story is an uplifting sweet romance, and I recommend it for your reading pleasure
