REVIEW: Jewel Stone and Shelby Andrews have been friends since grade school. Through the years they have done everything together. They were besties. When they were teens an incident caused a major rift between them, and they drifted apart, going their separate ways. Years later, Jewel gets a call from Shelby. At first Jewel hesitates to answer because the two of them hadn’t spoken to each other in ten years. For whatever reason, Shelby calling has to be important. Once Jewel finds out that Shelby had an accident and she needs her, there is no way Jewel wouldn’t be by her side. Unbeknown to Jewel, Shelby has lost twelve years of her memory. Shelby doesn’t remember the argument that tore them apart or the secret they share.
On the outside Jewel appears to have the perfect life. A nice home, a husband who loves her and a career as a best selling author. But nothing could be further from the truth. Her husband has lost his job. She has writer’s block, and her editor is pushing for another great novel, and everything seems to be falling apart. Shelby has a bookstore on the beach and an adopted daughter she doesn’t remember. She is afraid and alone and feels the only person who can help her is her best friend. Furthermore, Shelby’s adopted daughter, Lacey, is looking for her birth parents. And that presents another set of problems.
A SUMMER FOR THE BOOKS, by Michelle Lindo-Rice, is beautifully written story going back more than twenty years. A heartwarming, dramatic and funny story of the ups and downs of friendship and sisterhood forged over a period of time. Jewel and Shelby are more like sisters than friends. When they were in their teens they made a pact and one of them broke it causing a rift that kept them apart for many years. Fast forward to the present, Shelby has an accident on her bike and ends up with amnesia. Alone and afraid, she can’t remember a lot of things, but she hasn’t forgotten her bestie, Jewel. This story is filled with drama, deceit, secrets, conflicts, and broken promises. It has wonderful, relatable, well-defined characters that will keep you turning the pages to see what happens in the next scene.
A SUMMER FOR THE BOOKS is a very enjoyable, emotional read at times that’s sure to grab your interest. Pick up a copy, settle down in your favorite chair and find out how two best friends work together to fix what is broken in their relationship and get back to being besties.
