THE ACE - D. Camille
REVIEWER: Brenda Larnell | RATING: A
REVIEW: This series began with George Shaw, THE MASTER, then Book Two featured Malachi Roberts, THE EXPERT, and now we are introduced to Ethan Hall, THE ACE. The focal point of these stories centers around The Negus, a band of prominent Black men who have pledged to protect their community (Detroit, Michigan) and their culture from any and all entities that threaten the well-being of the community. In this series, which is a continuing storyline, we meet each man who is a member of the Negus team. The Ace, Ethan Hall, is something else! He looks good and is on every single lady’s radar in Detroit. He is the Field Director of Housing and Urban Development in Detroit with plans to become the Secretary of HUD in Washington D.C. He is a man of importance, a man of action, and a man of danger who can back up what he says. He is ‘The Ace’.
To say the least, Ethan Hall is a confident man who meets his match when he and Dawn Mitchell are brought together by their mutual friends, Malachi Roberts and Cynthia Walters (THE EXPERT) to be participants in their wedding. Dawn is her own boss, a master barber. She too has a plan for her future, and she is known for keeping it “one-hundred”. After much verbal banter, and time spent together, Ethan and Dawn’s attraction to each other catapults to a sultry, steamy, sexual level that neither can deny. However, their mutual attraction is only one facet of this book. Corruption abounds, mayhem reigns, and Dawn becomes a marked woman.
As I mentioned before, this is a continuing storyline, so the chaos from the previous book, spills into this book. The Negus is still investigating the Neo Negus. Therefore, Ethan is required to descend into the depths of the Michigan Correctional Facility to visit Patrice Dansby, the crooked Queen-pin of Detroit who keeps popping up like a bad weed. That bothers Ethan, but what bothers him most are the dark haunting memories this prison holds for him. No spoilers. Although Ethan utilizes his formidable skills as The Ace to quell some of the deadly attacks and murderous misdoings, the action continues as the Negus move closer to identifying the Neo Negus who are still waging war with their own tactics. While all of this is going on, gifted author, D Camille effectively incorporates a history lesson that revolves around the 40 Acres and a Mule promise that this government reneged on. It is an eye-opening segment of the story indeed.
Although progress is being made, there are plenty of loose ends and unanswered questions that will carry over to the next book. The books in this series are not to be read as stand-alones. You will need to read them in order. Having said that, I will also say that THE ACE has an HEA that you will enjoy. On the other hand, you will have to wait for the fall of this year for the next book. So, stay-tuned; THE GUIDE is coming. That gives you plenty of time to acquaint yourself with the three books of this series. Enjoy!
