IT MUST BE LOVE - Nicki Night
Harlequin Kimani Romance
REVIEWER: Janet Caldwell| RATING: B+
REVIEW: Bougie Jewel Chandler meets her match in Nicki Night’s latest installment in The Chandler Legacy saga. Jewel boasts to her inner circle that she will not stray from the high standards she demands in a mate - Ivy League education, no ex-wives and no children. That is until she meets her match in Sterling Bishop.
Jewel’s family owns Chandler Food Corporation a consumer goods dynasty and a waterside restaurant. She is consumed with proving to her tyrannical father, Bobby Dale, that she is worthy of a promotion to Vice President of Operations which was recently vacated by her long-time mentor. Much like her pretentious mother, El, Jewel has a cold personality and thrives on superficial elements like social status, material possessions and appearances.
Enter Sterling Bishop, a self-made man from a working-class family. He and his siblings attended the same prestigious high school as the Chandlers, however, they attended on scholarship. He and his brother Stephan own a prestigious technology firm and work hard to maintain a stellar reputation. One additional thing, Sterling is divorced and shared custody of a daughter.
Again, Night does an excellent job of creating multifaceted leading characters and blending them into a solid storyline. Jewel works extremely hard to please her domineering father. She is proud of the family business and is fully invested in it despite lucrative attempts to lure her away. The Chandler family is cohesive, but lacks the warmth of Sterling's down to earth relatives. Their obsession with succeeding in business leaves little time for exploring and accepting any family structure different from their own. Jewel soon realizes her condescending attitude doesn't warm her bed at night. Sterling may not be perfect, but he is the perfect man for her.
Characters impacting this story include Jewel’s domineering parents, her siblings and circle of friends; Sterling’s ex-wife and his precocious daughter who melts the ice queen’s heart. Thus is the fourth installment in the series and can be read alone but don’t deprive yourself of the complete storyline about a family learning that there is more to life than spreadsheets and bottom lines.
