DEADLY AFFECTIONS - Tracee Lydia Garner

REVIEW: DEADLY AFFECTIONS By Tracee Lydia Garner opens with a very dark and dangerous scene. The heroine, Leedra Henderson is trying to come to grips with a series of events that ultimately resulted in a kidnapping and her being knocked unconscious. The story is set in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area, specifically Virginia, where the reader becomes engaged in a suspenseful drama that takes you into the underbelly of a very disturbing and highly illegal criminal activity.
Leedra Henderson, aka Evie Carter, is looking forward to beginning a new life with a new job in her old hometown. A product of the foster care system, Leedra has a dual reason for coming back to the place where she has some horrific childhood memories. She will work with a nonprofit organization that serves women and children who are victims of abuse, and she will work to finally uncover the mystery of her sister’s death when they were both in foster care. As it happens, Leedra is reunited with Dexter Parker, the hero, who was also a member of her foster family when they were kids. Dexter is now Dr. Parker and it is his sister-in-law who hires Leedra to run the Anchored Empowerment Center. Ironically, the kidnapping at the beginning of the story involves Dexter’s young daughter, Kira. Added to this is Dexter’s need to find his own personal answers to past events of his childhood that placed him in the foster care system. As the story progresses, the reader becomes involved in a suspenseful drama that includes drugs, police corruption, and exposes one of the slimiest acts against children that you can imagine.
DEADLY AFFECTIONS is a “clean romance”, so there are no steamy and hot love scenes between the hero and heroine. However, there is no doubt that they are genuinely attracted to each other. I agree with the author as she notes that this story “depicts people who overcome adversity and obstacles”. Look forward to a HEA ending!
DEADLY AFFECTIONS is a good read. The author takes a very serious subject matter and weaves it successfully with a contemporary romance storyline. You will be engaged from the beginning to the end of the book. This is really the second book of a series that features the Parker brothers, but it can be read as a stand alone, and I recommend it.
