REVIEW: UNDERCOVER HERO by Jenn Winter is a real page turner. From the opening sentences of the Prologue, the reader is drawn into this gripping story of spousal abuse, secrets, lurking danger, and romance. It is in the closing pages of the novel that the reader realizes that the story shifts from the West Coast, Oregon, to the East Coast, Maryland and back to Oregon. That covers a significant distance, but it is important in that it conveys the length the heroine goes to flee an abusive marital situation.

The hero, Donovan Trotter and the heroine, Cora (Jones) Johnston meet under very unusual circumstances. Donovan, an investigator, is hired to investigate the injury claim of Fiona Johnston, Cora’s identical twin. Two things happen while Donovan starts his investigation: 1. He falls in love with Cora and 2. He slowly discovers that things are not as they appear to be. Donovan is completely obsessed with Cora to the point that his investigative instincts are so muddled that his company’s sterling reputation is on the line. On the other hand, Cora is trying to hold herself together, hold on to the plan that she and her sister have contrived, and hold on to what she has with Donovan. While they are certainly attracted to each other, their love affair is challenged by mistrust and mystery.

The fast paced storyline is bolstered by some great side characters. Fiona, Cora’s twin who is a partner in a ruse to help her twin. There is Noah, Donovan’s long time friend and business partner who offers support. Last, but not least, is the villainous Marshall Jones, Cora’s unstable and combative husband. These characters, plus a few more, are participants in a first-rate romantic suspense.

UNDERCOVER HERO was a good read despite some grammatical/typo errors; however, they did not distract from the story. Author Jenn Winter does an excellent job of crafting a story that includes a serious subject matter like abuse, underlying suspense, and steamy romance. I recommend it, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
