THE RACHER RETURNS - Brenda Jackson
REVIEWER: Beverly Jackson | RATING: B
REVIEW: Coming off a dangerous covert operation, Navy SEAL Gavin Blake finds himself postponing a much-needed lustful night of pleasure to return home to attend to an urgent manner. Home is a prosperous cattle ranch in Missouri and the urgent matter is that his grandmother has given permission to a college professor to dig on their property for Jesse James’ buried treasure. All prepared to send the professor packing, Garvin is thrown off his game when a jolt of sexual desire courses through his body when being introduced to the professor, Dr. Layla Harris. While Garvin is convinced that Layla did not hoodwink his grandma, he is still not sure about her about her research and digging on the spot that holds special meaning to him. The beauteous Layla has never known a man who left her in a “mind-blowing sensuous state” just by looking at her. Layla is sure she can put those feelings aside as she is a woman on a mission. This dig needs to happen and be successfully as her creditability and future is on the line. But Garvin has set his sights on having Layla in his bed, and a deal is struck that will test both of their fortitude to keep to their end of the bargain. But something going off plan has the best outcomes.
Ms. Jackson is one of the best at building scorching sexual tension that sizzles off the page as the hero and heroine play a cat-and-mouse game until they cannot hold out any longer. Garvin comes across as a little coarse at the beginning as all he seems to say/think is about getting Layla to have sex with him. Layla has been busy earning degrees and establishing her career and has no time for men and sex. Both the hero and heroine’s attitude towards relationships is based on the demons in the past so until they learn to listen to their hearts they will be in a tenuous place. It will be the exposure of the mystery of what is buried that will help resolve these issues. Unfortunately, this aspect of the plotline was predictable and the pacing was slow in the beginning. Perhaps this is intentional so the readers can appreciate the couple’s transition from analytical to emotional is subtle and splendid.
THE RANCHER RETURNS is the first book in The Westmoreland Legacy series where friends of the legendary Westmoreland family will find their happily-ever-after. Fans will be happy with the appearance of the Navy SEALs in this storyline that were first introduced in BANE as their bantering and take-no-prisoners attitudes enlivens action.
Overall, this light breezy read is a solid read for fans craving lots of sexual chemistry, a little mystery and family drama
