SYNOPSIS: After tragedy brings her home to Louisiana, all Shayla Kirkland wants is to reconnect with her family. Between helping care for her nieces and running her recently opened coffee shop, there's no time for romance. Until the workaholic entrepreneur meets Xavier Wright, the hunky E.R. doctor who has the local females waiting in line.
REVIEW: FOREVER’S PROMISE is the tender story of two people who have allowed deep emotional scars to hamper their ability to love. Shayla Kirkland and Dr. Xavier Wright relocate to Gauthier for different reasons, but later learn that this sleepy southern hamlet is just the medicine needed to heal their wounds.
FOREVER’S PROMISE is Farah Rochon’s fourth installment in her Bayou Dreams series. Like the other offerings, the setting, Gauthier, Louisiana, is fictional. The rich descriptions of the bayou region are on point thanks to Louisiana native Rochon.
Shayla is a former coffee company executive from Seattle who now owns Gauthier’s thriving, but problematic coffeehouse, The Jazzy Bean. Always headstrong and independent, Shayla now finds herself knee-deep in uneasy family dynamics after her brother’s untimely death.
Xavier is the gorgeous new emergency room doctor from Atlanta on temporary assignment at nearby Maplesville General Hospital. As an employee of the Good Doctors, Good Deeds medical humanitarian organization, Dr. Wright swoops in, does his job then moves on. This hectic schedule leaves little time for a social life and minimizes the chance of possibly meeting someone who could do harm to his fragile heart.
Shayla and Xavier’s first meeting is in the hospital ER and is contentious at best after a threat is made to make a report to child protective services - not the most ideal foundation upon which to build a relationship. Despite the accusation based on supposition, Xavier and Shayla can’t deny an unexpected attraction.
The setting for FOREVER’S PROMISE is primarily Gauthier with trips to nearby Maplesville. Secondary characters include Shayla’s deceased brother’s wife and her two nieces who were instrumental in her decision to relocate to Gauthier.
I have been a fan of Rochon’s Bayou Dreams series from the beginning, however, the last installment, YOURS FOREVER, was disappointing. I am giddy that Rochon returns to the roots of her Bayou dreams series and this time delivers a poignant novel as sweet, alluring, intoxicating, and sensuous as honeysuckle yet steamy as the Louisiana bayou. Shayla and Xavier are likeable and easy to connect with. This is a quick read and a perfect complement to the series.
