SYNOPSIS:

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE |4|  Marguerite Lemons

REVIEW:  Yvette Brooks is in the middle of planning her wedding to her long-time fiancé Dr. Terrence Hall, when she gets a promoted to assistant principal at school in Nashville, Tennessee.  Yvette is unsure about taking the position she applied for a year ago after discovering that Terrence has been cheating on her.  Terrence is an OB-GYN who specializes in maternal fetal medicine and high-risk pregnancies; his other specialty is women.  He’s cheated on Yvette once before and he knows that if he does it again he will lose her.  Yvette thinks that their time apart will finally make Terrence stop taking her for granted.  Will absence make the heart grow fonder, or will the mouse play while the cat is away?

Yvette is a smart woman who is devoted to her family and friends.  Unfortunately, for years she has allowed other people to manipulate and guilt her into living her life to please them instead of living it on her own terms.  She must make a hard decision when faced with mentoring a sexy, twenty-one year old college student, who is determined to make her his woman; regardless of their age difference or the fact that Yvette is engaged to another man.  Meanwhile, Terrence decides that what Yvette doesn’t know won’t hurt her, and begins having an affair with her best friend.  Terrence is shallow, self-absorbed, and totally immature.  He may be a brilliant doctor, but he’s a sorry excuse for a man and his true colors shine through when he becomes a victim of the circumstances he’s created.

THINGS FORBIDDEN is an engaging and entertaining story of a thirty-four year old woman who finally comes into her own.  After being pushed and manipulated by other people all of her life, she finally realizes with the help of the mother she can’t stand; that she has to take control of her life in order to be happy.  The author did a wonderful job working through the strained relationship between Yvette and her mother.  She also brought home the fact that it is not a good thing to tell your best friend everything that goes on between you and your man.  The supporting characters caused just enough drama to keep you turning the pages until the end.

THINGS FORBIDDEN is a quick read, but it’s well worth the time.
