Every now and again, a book comes on the scene that makes readers say
“wow.” GHOSTS OF FIRE by Maureen Morah Smith is such a work.
Rachel Calloway is a beautiful graphic designer with issues. Inside of
her is a dark place that no one can reach.
Nick Hunter is as handsome as Rachel is beautiful. He is, however, as
arrogant as anyone can be. He’s a prosecutor of the finest sort and is highly celebrated for his legal skills.
They meet when Hunter’s the prosecutor assigned to prosecute her
father when he’s accused of torching his own restaurant. Hunter is ruthless and will use any means necessary to win his case. He believes that
Mr. Calloway’s guilty and refuses to let anyone or anything come between him and his perfect prosecutorial track record.
For the very first time in his illustrious career, something happens
to upset his usually calm exterior and routine; he becomes smitten with Rachael. From the first day they meet, he’s never the same. Their
meetings are volatile but beneath all that fire is passion—the kind to lead them straight to the bedroom. He is attracted to her and she to
him, although everything about their possibly getting together is wrong.
As Fate would have it, they do the best to fight their illicit
feelings, but their hearts know better. They wind up falling madly in love and that is when the plot really thickens!
As mentioned earlier, Morah Smith is a new author, but reading her novel, readers will
think she’s a veteran. GHOSTS OF FIRE is that good. It doesn’t have the usual first novel problems such as head-hopping and
sporadic point-of-view changes, weak characterization or the use of extraneous plot devices, etc. Instead, this novel is replete with rich,
well-crafted characters, a well-drawn plot, lots of conflict, snappy dialogue and the interesting backdrop of Upper Marlboro,
Maryland. Add a heaping
helping of suspense and you have one of the best reads of 2002.
Morah Smith weaves a tale of love and suspense that will have readers
on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the plot’s outcome. When the book is finished, they’ll demand more!
Morah Smith is an author to watch. She is destined for great things
and her work will soar to great heights if GHOSTS OF FIRE is any indication of what she can do. It’s been a long,
long time since a book has been written so tightly and has captured the attention of so many book lovers so quickly. In this instance, the
buzz has been positive and it’s all true about this very talented new author! |
