REVIEW: Sharon C. Cooper showcases her skills as a Romantic Suspense writer with her latest story in HIS TO DEFEND. Police Sergeant, Maxwell Layton and Amina Kelly, pediatric nurse, come together in this tense suspense-filled mystery that involves the killing of a police officer. That officer, Jeremy Kelly, is not only Amina’s ex-husband, but he is also Maxwell’s ex-friend. Ah! There lies the problem. The well-written storyline is layered with revelations about the ill-fated Jeremy that eventually led to his murder.

The story opens with the murder of Jeremy whose reputation has tanked so low that he is almost an outcast in some people’s eyes. One of those people is his ex-wife, Amina. Their short-lived marriage is a nightmare for Amina. Maxwell has no love for Jeremy for a couple of reasons: One, because of the deceptive way he got Amina and two, because of the way he treated her. It’s complicated, but Ms Cooper does a bang-up job in revealing the true Jeremy Kelly through the investigation of his murder. As the investigation progresses, Amina’s life is in jeopardy, which causes Maxwell to go into protector mode. Ironically, the aftermath of Jeremy’s reckless lifestyle helps to bring Maxwell and Amina together. There’s some history there, but you will have to read the story to discover what it is. Their restored relationship, in spite of very trying circumstances, opens the door to some very hot love scenes that are no joke. Get ready.

The minor characters contribute to the intrigue of the story, along with some twists and turns that you never see coming. Things get so bad that Maxwell has to call in his best friend, Trace (
HIS TO PROTECT), to add an extra line of defense. Even though the “bad guy”, Jeremy, dies early in the story, the fall-out is intense. As intense as the storyline becomes, the HEA comes through for Maxwell and Amina like a breath of fresh air.

HIS TO DEFEND is an engaging thriller. I enjoyed it, and I  recommend it for your reading pleasure. While you’re at it, I suggest that you pick up a copy of HIS TO PROTECT. You can thank me later.
