REVIEW: If you have read BEFORE I LET GO and THIS COULD BE US, Books #1 and #2 of the acclaimed Skyland Series, then Hendrix Barry, the FMC, is no stranger to you. She is that single, successful, tell-it-like-it-is sister friend to Soledad and Yasmen and the love-to-have-around “aunty” to their children. Hendrix loves her friends and family. She co-owns, with two other women, a thriving agency that supports entrepreneurial women trying to make their mark in business. She is that woman!
Yet, Hendrix’s story is so much more than that. Not only is Hendrix ambitious, goal-oriented and outspoken, but she also faces challenges head on. Her mother has Alzheimers, and being an only child, Hendrix becomes one of her caregivers, along with her Aunt Geneva. Kudos to Ms. Ryan for her in-depth research of this debilitating disease and allowing it to play a significant role in telling Hendrix’s story. Also, highlighted in this story is a lawsuit brought against Hendrix’s venture capitalist business dedicated to helping women of color finance their own businesses. The theme of female empowerment and the opposition against it is brilliantly represented through this storyline taken from a real-life legal case.
Things change for Hendrix, when she encounters Maverick Bell, a billionaire tech mogul, and a mover and shaker. Their romance is an emotional exploration of love, sacrifice and just wanting the best for each other. What is more, Maverick “gets” Hendrix. He gets that she is a force-to-be-reckoned with, and he wants to be the man in her life who, not only loves her but, sees her and supports her. Maverick also is involved in a predicament that will test him. I will allow you to discover Maverick’s situation when you read the story. Despite his troubles, Mav remains team Hen all the way. He is that man!
I love the support, importance of family, and lightheartedness the minor characters bring to this story. Of course there’s Hendrix’s two besties, Yasmen and Soledad, female leads of the earlier books in the series. There is also Aunt Geneva, who is there for Hendrix and her mother. I can’t leave out Bolt, Maverick’s assistant and Skipper, Hendrix’s assistant. Great couple! For Maverick and Hendrix, they get their HFN, but there are still battles to fight. However, after all is said and done, Mav and Hen will be all right.
CAN’T GET ENOUGH is a phenomenal read, and I highly recommend it. On one hand it is deeply emotional and sensual, while at the same time it addresses stressful family issues, and female empowerment while highlighting women’s loving relationships. It can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend you read Books #1 and #2 mentioned earlier. They are stellar reads also. Kennedy Ryan is that author!
