REVIEW: ALL MY SISTERS AND ME is a warm, emotionally layered novel about family, sisterhood, grief, jealousy, forgiveness, and the fragile bonds that can either fracture under pressure or become stronger through honesty. Centered on four sisters-in-law, Giselle, Kamryn, Chanel, and Taylor, the novel explores what happens when years of resentment, insecurity, and unspoken pain surface during a weeklong anniversary celebration.
The in-laws, Yvonne and Aaron Bradley, are the matriarch and patriarch of this family of sons and daughters-in-laws who often get together for family occasions. The story focuses on the women who are connected by marriage but separated by unresolved conflict. Giselle, married to the eldest son, Shawn, is struggling with the pain of childlessness and the feelings of inadequacy that come with it. Kamryn, married to Tariq, wants peace but is worn down by her strained relationship with Giselle. Chanel, newly married to Vincent, longs for a close-knit family but finds herself caught in the middle. Taylor, married to Austin, meanwhile, is trying to understand where she belongs after a tragedy that leaves her on the edge of the family she has known since high school.
Ms. Lister’s strength lies in portraying family conflict with compassion. Rather than reducing any character to the role of villain, the story gives each woman a reason for the choices she makes. The result is rooted in everyday family dynamics: misunderstandings that harden over time, jealousy that masks deeper hurts, and silence that becomes its own kind of distance.
The book’s central question is not simply whether these women can get along, but whether they can see each other clearly enough to become the “sisters” they were meant to be. Themes of forgiveness, belonging, infertility, grief, and chosen family give the novel emotional depth. The anniversary celebration for Mama Yvonne and Papa Aaron sets the stage that allows tensions to build naturally, and to also provides a platform for the sisters-in-law to eventually become sisters-of-the-heart.
ALL MY SISTERS AND ME will appeal to readers who enjoy women’s fiction, family drama, and stories about complicated relationships among women. It also offers an emotional look at how love and loyalty can be tested inside a family. With its focus on sisterhood and reconciliation, ALL MY SISTERS AND ME will also make a thoughtful and discussion-worthy choice for book clubs. I recommend it for your reading pleasure.
