REVIEW:  Raleigh, North Carolina is the setting for PLAYING FOR KEEPS, Book 2 of the Sultry Southern Nights Series, featuring Malcolm Cobb, co-owner of The Playground, a well-known Raleigh nightclub, and Priscilla ‘Cilla’ Jameson, a healthcare administrator. If you are familiar with this series, you know that The Playground serves as an appropriate backdrop for the storyline.

I liked this story because there was a lot more to it than just the average boy meets girl, they fall in love, and live happily-ever-after kind of romance story. Don’t despair, my fellow romance junkies; that happens quite well. The chemistry between Malcolm and Cilla is off the chart hot! In addition to the well written erotic encounters, the author skillfully infuses some timely, relevant and serious topics into this story that gives it much substance.

Not only do we have a couple navigating the romantic waters to discover true love, but we also have characters dealing with the tragedy of drug addiction, child sex trafficking, and child abuse. Side characters like Romeo, Malcolm’s best friend and co-owner of The Playground; Cleo and Claudia, Malcolm’s teen twin daughters; Shanell, Malcolm’s ex-wife; and the Matriarchs, Mama Claudette and Maxine are strong and well-developed. They enhance the storyline immensely.

Kudos to author Deborah Fletcher Mello for a contemporary romance story that also deals with some contemporary social issues. I enjoyed reading
PLAYING FOR KEEPS and I think you will enjoy it too. It’s a definite addition to any TBR (To Be Read) list. And while you are at it, grab Book 1, PLAYING WITH FIRE. You can thank me later!
