REVIEW: Nicki Night’s debut novel, HER CHANCE AT LOVE, follows sexy Blake Barrington’s relentless pursuit of the standoffish Cadence Payne. This is the first installment in her Barrington Brothers series about three successful men who all possess qualities irresistible to women.

Cadence is taking a sabbatical from men, especially attorneys, following the break up with her fiancé and his subsequent quickie marriage. She is a bright attorney with plans to become the youngest female partner in her firm. Her introverted personality isn’t helping her quest, but she is working on busting out of that shell.

Blake Barrington is also an attorney and the complete opposite of Cadence. Blake is outgoing, adventurous, spontaneous and popular. He spots Cadence at a social event and decides she is what he wants and puts a plan in action to get her.

Cadence eventually lifts her ban on dating attorneys only to soon discover her new love interest is caught up in a political scandal which squashes her newfound self-confidence. Cadence’s solution is to distance Blake and reprimand herself for letting her guard down. That is the perfect solution until Blake hires her firm to represent him and she is assigned to handle the case.

Although predictable, Night’s literary debut is humorous and skillfully executed except for the resolution of the political scandal. That part of the storyline seems rushed and transitions awkwardly to the end of the novel. The setting for the story is New York City and the main characters are believable and likeable. I enjoyed Blake’s cocky humor and his creative dating ideas. Blake’s playboy brothers are prominent in the story, as well as, Cadence’s father and her best friend, Alana. Despite their on again, off again relationship, Cadence finally realizes you can’t let the fear of being hurt keep you from enjoying life. With two more brothers waiting in the wings, I am anxious to see which Barrington will be tamed next. If you are curious too, join me, but start by reading HER CHANCE AT LOVE first.
