ABOUT NINA CRESPO
What made you become a writer?
I love reading and always had an interest in creating stories. A few years ago, a friend who was also my business advisor/coach noticed I’d lost interest in expanding the business I owned at the time and asked what I’d rather be doing. I laughed and said writing romance. She was surprised. After talking about it, she questioned why I wasn’t pursuing a writing career. I didn’t have a good answer. I started writing the following week, and I haven’t stopped.
In which genre(s) do you write? Which genre do you prefer and why (if more than one)?
I’m currently writing contemporary romance. I’ve also written a paranormal/fantasy romance series. As far as a preference, I can’t say that I have one. I enjoy writing both.
Describe a typical day for Nina, the writer?
I start the day by reading or listening to something positive and working out. I’m usually at my desk writing around eleven in the morning. I’ll take a break to handle admin tasks. If I’m on a deadline or really into a story, I’ll still be at my desk after midnight. I’m more of a night owl. Where I am in the book cycle-writing, editing, celebrating a book release, or handling all three at once-also shapes where I have to schedule my attention on a daily basis.
What do you like to do when you want to relax?
Long walks with my husband, sitting on the beach, or curling up with a good book are relaxing for me. Right now, I’m really missing date nights with friends and dancing at one of the local spots.
ABOUT THE BOOKS
Tell us about THE COWBOY’S CLAIM.
Tristan is a cowboy intent on reclaiming his legacy after being written out of his father’s will. This hasn’t been an easy task for him. Chloe is an actress who comes to his family’s stable to research a part in a movie, but she’s afraid of horses. Sparks happen when they are thrown together. Their story is an opposites-attract romance.
Although THE COWBOY’S CLAIM is your first book for Harlequin, it is not your first book. Tell us about that book.
My debut book as a published author was TAKE ME IF YOU DARE and Book #1 of my Birthday Dare Series duet with Entangled Publishing. Jasmine accepts a dare from her best friend to have a one-night stand on her birthday. She does, with Ethan. Afterwards, the unthinkable happens. Jasmine is assigned to work at the firm where Ethan is a security specialist. It’s a fling to a thing, office romance.
If you had to choose one book to introduce a new reader to your work, which would it be and why?
That would depend on the level of sizzle a reader is looking for in a romance book. If a steamy story is their preference, I would recommend THE FIRST RULE OF HOOK-UPS, Breakup Bash Series (Book #1) Entangled Publishing. If romantic and sexy is what they’re looking for then I would suggest THE COWBOY’S CLAIM.
How have you changed as a writer since that first book?
When I first started, I knew little about how the publishing industry worked. Now, as a full-time writer, I’m more informed about writing proposals, reviewing contracts, and what goes into releasing a book.
What do you see as your greatest accomplishment as an author?
I’m still here, writing and sharing my stories. This isn’t the easiest of professions. Clarity about what I want out of my career, moving past challenges, and having friends who remind me to fully embrace my successes are the things that keep me going.
How do you feel about the state of the romance industry; in particular, the treatment of authors of color?
The industry is in a place of learning to do better in their treatment of authors of color and unlearning practices that have allowed us to be treated unfairly. It’s an ongoing process. I’m optimistic about continuing to see more positive changes in the industry.
What’s next for Nina?
More writing. I’m currently working on THE LAST RULE OF MAKE-UPS, Breakup Bash, Book #3 (Entangled Publishing, Fall 2020) and the Book #3 in Tillbridge Stables Series (Harlequin, Feb 2021). After that, I’m jumping straight into the book I’m writing for Harlequin’s The Fortunes Of Texas Continuity Series (Spring, 2021). I’m also drafting the next series idea.
FOR THE READERS
If there was one thing you could tell your readers, what would it be?
Thanks for reading! I love that you’re on the author journey with me.
What advice would you give an aspiring author?
When you have the opportunity to work or speak with anyone in the industry make listening and learning your priorities. Knowledge is an investment in yourself. It will always hold its value and can never be taken away from you.
